Antique Dowry Syrian Chest

Antique and all handmade from the 1800s in India.  Solid wood Syrian dowry chest. Most where made with mother of pearl, but this one wasn’t. They did start off with it as it has the mother of pearl underneath in the back front. We did add some metal double roller catches to keep the door shut because this has no original key. The original keys where handmade so it would be extremely hard to find as they do not make them anymore. This one also doesn’t open from the top it opens from the front. It has 2 removable shelves inside that I believe are not original. I haven’t seen many of these before. They are very rare.

History on these chests:

These where given to the bride by the parents. In India for example, the Dowry chests are quite significant till date. It is believed that the quality of the Dowry chests represents the value of the bride hence most parents invest deeply in the quality and design of Dowry Chests.  This way, the bride will always feel valued, supported and loved by her family. It is also a way of ensuring that the bride is well taken care of in her new home.

It is important to note that Dowry chests contents are always selected by the bride’s family depending on the region and culture. Its contents are strategically identified to ensure that the bride will be able to establish her new home and family.
